Good pack Review by Q

This is the 2nd one I’ve had. Used it all over the west and on a week long mountain bike exploration of the old silver trail in Mexico’s Copper Canyon in 2006 and bought another recently. Held about 35 lbs comfortably but best to keep it near 20 lbs if possible. I added hip belt pockets and would like to see GG do that on future models - just enough to hold a phone/gps and some food. The side pockets are easy to access stuff while the pack is on. Using a rolled 1/2 pad as the structure works well but takes up space. I’d like to see GG add a pocket/slot to slip a piece pad into for a back structure. It would give us more options to rig the pack. Good price though and a good pack. (Posted on 9/16/2018)

Awesome UL Option Review by ATHkr

I came across this pack on an ultralight website gear review and purchased it last year. It's been my "go-to" pack for multiple day trips and it's the perfect option to save weight on the "big 3."

Features I really appreciate are the quality of materials & workmanship. The stretch fabric for the outside pockets haven't ripped and take any load you want to put in them.
I also like the roll-top design and minimal straps.

Only one suggestion and that is to make the drain holes on the outside lateral pockets just a little smaller since some items stored may slip out.

Fantastic product and highly recommended!

Perfect for me Review by Kobio

I use this with my bearikade Scout and it works great. I just use my pad as a frame. Lots of room and different ways to attach things. If fits me perfectly and seems like it will hold up for a very long time. Not a lot of padding on the hips but if you keep your weight under 20lbs it's very comfortable. I usually start around 22lbs but get down below that quickly. I keep trying to find something better but I simply can't find anything! Thanks GG! (Posted on 5/31/2016)
A Thru Hikers Best Friend! Review by Packing It Out

Fit
This pack has held all of my possessions on two different occasions. Once during a 100 mile backpacking trip on the Superior Hiking Trail and again on a recent 2,200 mile journey along the Appalachian Trail. I’ve walked over 150 days with this pack on and feel it’s been broken in well. There are three things I look for in a pack, four if you’re counting weight. They are comfort, durability, and functionality. Below I will discuss what I’ve experienced using the Virga 2 the last 5 months.

Comfort

Granite Gear lists the upper weight limit for this pack at 20lbs. I found this weight limit to be accurate. 20lbs or less is ideal but the pack will perform with up to 30lbs if necessary. Most of the time using this pack I carried between 16- 24 lbs. Adding my sleeping pad along the inside of the pack really helped stiffen it up making it even more comfortable. Some care should be taken when loading so that hard objects (i.e. cook-pot) aren’t pressed against the back of the pack. This could lead to some discomfort. For someone going ultra-light who still wants to retain a respectable level of comfort, this is your pack.

Durability

Not only was Granite Gear able to keep the weight down they pretty much guaranteed a durable product by using Cordura fabrics. I’m not particularly rough with my equipment but even after thousands of miles of use this pack looks like new. One small tear developed in the front pocket from user error. I was stuffing my tent stakes in and poked a little hole in the fabric. Other than that the whole pack is in excellent condition.

Functionality

There is a reason so many thru-hikers choose to use Granite Gear packs. They possess this ability to make a pack that becomes almost a part of you. This pack was clearly tested by thru hikers. The Virga 2 is simple but functional. Having the 3 large capacity pockets on the outside of the pack made everything day that much better. I love being able to have a warm hat, gloves, a snack, and my water bottle in only one pocket and other daily necessities in the other 2 pockets . While the roll top closure can make it hard to get to things at the bottom of your pack. A little pre planning before you load the pack easily fixes that issue.

Overall this is a absolutely fantastic pack. If you are looking for a lightweight durable pack that is functional and comfortable the Virga 2 is your pack.

Great Pack for the Price!!! Review by Matthew

This is a great pack for the person who is weight conscious and wants to hike light and fast. For the price this beats out so many of the other packs and still has plenty of room for a 3 season kit. The only downfall of this pack if there are no hip belt pocket, but Granite Gear has one available on their site. Overall this is my go-to pack and I take it out every time. (Posted on 5/14/2015)
